Television
Television is an electrical signal used to transport images and sounds over long distances so they can be watched in our own homes as entertainment or as a way of staying in contact with family and friends.
Joseph May first made television possible in 1872 through his observation that selenium wire changed conductivity when exposed to sunlight rays, creating television. This event would later make possible radio.
However, practical television systems did not emerge until the 1920s. Scottish engineer John Logie Baird’s prototype video systems used a Nipkow disk that featured holes to block out light reflecting from images while permitting only inbound illumination through through its outermost hole.
Early systems had a fixed aspect ratio of 4:3, matching cinema films of the time. But modern flat-screen technologies do not impose such technical restrictions.
